Have you played with Gather? (https://gather.town) I used it for the completely online class meetings after Thanksgiving and I found it works much better that Zoom for having students work in pairs or small groups. It isn't perfect, but it brings back a lot of the good things about actual interactions in person. We are setting up our departmental space there in the spring and I'm optimistic that having faculty use it for office hours will bring back social interactions and the random encounters that online interactions seem to stifle.
