Planes do most of their flying under computer control. Your citation of a handful of accidents caused during the use of Autopilot is actually an argument that it should be used to anyone who understands statistics. How many accidents have occurred in the US during that time caused by human drivers? Unless you can show that Autopilot causes more wrecks per mile than human-driven cars a value like “over a dozen” sounds to me like it is incredibly successful and safe. The US has over 6 million car accidents each year (over 16,000/day) and about 37,000 fatalities (~90/day). Autopilot has been a product for several years now what has become the best-selling luxury car line in the country. So ~12 deaths from Autopilot compared to ~80,000+ from human drivers doesn’t seem to back up your claim that it is unsafe. Indeed, it seems very likely to me that if you work out the math you will find that Autopilot causes a lot fewer wrecks per mile driven than human drivers.
